Occupational therapy uses licensed health professionals specially trained to evaluate patients with joint conditions, such as arthritis, to determine the impact the disease on their activities of daily living. Occupational therapists can design and prescribe assistive devices that can improve the quality of the activities of daily living for patients with conditions of the muscles and joints.
If you—or someone in your family—has difficulty with activities you normally take for granted, an occupational therapist may be able to help. These routine activities include preparing meals, getting ready for work, driving to school or work, performing your job duties, using the telephone or computer, eating, doing the laundry, grocery shopping, cleaning house, visiting friends, taking care of family members, participating in hobbies, playing sports and taking care of your pets.
Beverly’s occupational therapists can make a complete evaluation of the impact the difficulty has on your activities both at home and in work situations. They will also consider hobbies and recreational activities when making your assessment.
Here’s what usually happens: Our occupational therapist will conduct a thorough interview and ask questions about hygiene, grooming, eating, drinking, dressing, getting in and out of bed, driving, cleaning, cooking, shopping and working. Then a physical examination will be conducted that concentrates on range-of-motion and the observation of deformities that might hinder performance. A treatment plan will be individualized based on specific needs, goals and desires.
Each patient will learn how to use the right techniques and equipment. If unable to feed yourself due to illness or aging, a rocker knife, plate guard and spork may be recommended. These eating utensils may look a little different than the usual knife, fork and spoon, but they can make it easier to preserve independence in self-feeding.
We work directly with patients and their family members to understand the necessity for a prescribed program. It helps to have a family member who can lend a supporting hand or cheer on progress. We make every effort for the rehabilitation experience to be one of both joy and accomplishment—a time when hope is restored.
