Izora Torbert's life in her younger days wasn't always easy, but she found a way to overcome her trials. When her parents died at a young age, she raised her brothers and sisters, in addition to her sister's children and three of her own.
"It didn't kill me," said the Beverly Healthcare resident.
Torbert, who carries the distinction of being the nursing home's oldest resident, turned 106 on Saturday. She's had several celebrations so far, but her family is planning the largest party for early February.
Activities director Nancy White said Torbert had been enjoying various cakes for the past four days. Evidently, Torbert didn't mind the abundance of sweets. "I want another piece of cake," she said just before lunch on Monday. "Any kind will do."
She said she doesn't know any secrets to living a long life.
Torbert was born in 1898 in Salem, a small town near Opelika. She was a homemaker and farmer, raising 11 children.
