Northcrest Nursing and Rehabilitation Center earns Step 2 Quality Award

Some of the best skilled nursing facility care is being provided in places most people have never heard of, like Toccoa, Ga., and Napoleon, Ohio. But it is in these little-known communities -- along with some more recognizable ones -- that facilities have earned the 2002 American Health Care Association Step 2 Quality Award.

Jennifer Riebesehl, director of nursing at Beverly's Northcrest Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Napoleon, Ohio, says fostering a sense of community has improved quality in her facility. "We have a lot of long-term staff, some of whom have been here for more than 25 years," she says. The tenure of these employees and their investment in the community have created an environment where everyone cares about one another, Riebesehl says, noting that one longtime employee -- Flo Like -- was recognized by the Ohio Health Care Association as Long Term Care Hero of the Month.

In addition to having a strong sense of community, being part of the Beverly family has enabled Northcrest to achieve quality success, according to Riebesehl, who says, "The resources and support we get from Beverly are endless." Beverly has implemented at Northcrest its Freedom Through Functionality program, which uses specially designed geriatric Nautilus equipment. "It's been a wonderful enhancement for our therapy program," she says.

The American Health Care Association (AHCA) created its prestigious Quality Award in 1996 in response to a growing need for quantifiable indicators of quality and to better reflect the trends in quality management and performance measurement. The three-step Quality Award program is modeled after the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.
