This Letter to the Editor was reprinted with permission from the Jan. 22, 2004, edition of The Fowler Ensign, Sanger, Calif.
January is the time when Fowler residents send their nominations to the Fowler Chamber of Commerce for Citizen, Business, Industry and Youth of the Year 2004 Awards.
I would like to nominate Fowler Convalescent Hospital as a Business of the Year 2004 Award recipient. Here's my reason why.
My mother, Yeghisabed Sarkisian, spent 11 days in the Fowler Convalescent Hospital from Sept. 19 through Sept. 30. She was transferred there directly from Fresno Community Hospital. I spent most of my time at the hospital and came home only to rest and cook homemade meals for her.
During this short period of time I got acquainted with residents, their family members and staff. I realized how fortunate we were, to have this facility in Fowler. I also realized that it is a big challenge to work there. The workload is tremendous, stress is indescribable.
They provide special food for patients with special needs. Nurses checked patients vital signs twice a day, made sure patients take their medications, ate their food, registered in a chart patients food intake, changed their beds and clothing as needed.
They also scheduled appointments with specialists, made arrangements for transportation, called ambulances in a timely manner, discussed patients progress with physicians, asked for advice, and ordered their medications.
Piano, television, VCR, games and activities are provided. Residents have elected officers, who hold regular meetings and take their concerns to the staff.
Everyone that I met in that very short period of time were very friendly, caring and supportive. I realized that these people are very special people. They work the toughest beat in the city.
I strongly believe that this group of people deserve to be recognized by the Fowler community and the Chamber of Commerce for their hard work and dedication.
Thank you, Astine Zadourian.
Editor's note: The actual name of the Beverly facility is Sanger Convalescent Hospital.
