H. Leroy Stafford, a resident of Beverly Healthcare, Cambridge Springs, celebrated his 100th birthday Friday at a party at the home. His birthday was Saturday, Nov. 8. He was born in his home in Edinburg on Nov. 8, 1903. He married Florence Steward and resided in Waterford until 1968.
His family includes Lois Zilhaver of Erie; and from Florence's previous marriage, three stepchildren, Bob Bartlett of Erie, Eileen Donnell of Waterford and Shirley Strokes of Erie.
Mr. Stafford was raised on a farm and as an adult worked at the General Electric Co. plant in Erie for 31 years. He attended Edinboro Normal School.
His wife died in 1995. He remained in Florida until moving to Beverly Healthcare in Cambridge Springs in 2001.
Mr. Stafford remained active at the Aldersgate Methodist church in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., as the head usher. He also was a member of the Odd Fellows, and participated in a golf league until the age of 95 and a bowling league until he was 70.
His extended family consists of 15 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
He continues to enjoy [drinking] coffee, talking with staff members, following current events and reminiscing when given the opportunity.
