This Letter to the Editor, written by family member Gloria Kock, was reprinted with permission from the Oct. 23, 2003, edition of the Salem Special in Salem, S.D.
I wanted to tell the people of Salem and the surrounding area how fortunate you are to have Beverly Healthcare and its staff in your community.
In June my brother was involved in a motor vehicle accident. He sustained a head injury and was hospitalized in Sioux Falls, S.D. At the end of July, social services and the doctors at the hospital told our family we would have to place this 51-year-old man in a long-term care facility.
He was unable to walk and there were days when he didn't recognize us. I set out to visit nursing homes from Sioux Falls to Mitchell. I must tell you it would have been so easy to place him in Sioux Falls where I work or other places closer to home.
Not only did I interview the directors of nursing, business administrators and social workers, but when I toured the facilities looking at their physical therapy department, I also watched the interaction between the staff and residents. I found Beverly Healthcare of Salem to be the best, and they have proven that over and over.
Not only is my brother starting to walk, but our family is kept totally involved in his care, and this does not happen in all nursing homes. Hopefully, you will never need a nursing home, but if you do, you have the very best.
Sincerely, Gloria Kock Chancellor, S.D.
