During the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War, Raymond Conners served our country as a war room specialist, being able to write backward as easily as forward on strategic maps, a skill he still possesses. He was also a tail-gunner while in the Air Force.
Today, Conners is a Hospice Care patient, residing at Morgan Manor. On Sunday, Conners soared above Monongalia County, as he took a private airplane ride over Cheat Lake and vicinity.
Hospice Care's Joni Fletcher is Conners' primary nurse, and noticed Conners light up when he would share his military experiences. "I asked him if he would like to ride in an airplane, and he said 'Yeah, that would be alright.' Then our hospice nurse, Doug Efaw, made some calls and set it up," said Fletcher.
Efaw volunteers with the Civil Air Patrol and arranged for pilot Richard Judy to take Conners for a flight. Judy has flown for 30 years. "It's something our pilot's club does whenever there is an opportunity," Judy said. "I really enjoy taking people up."
Conners was accompanied on his half-hour flight by Hospice Care nurse Scott Porubaix. Hospice Care nurse Mary Mays, Fletcher, Office Manager Linda Lawrence and Morgan Manor restorative therapy nurse Barbara Southern cheered from the ground. Afterward, they took Conners out for frozen yogurt.
"It all came together so easily because of generosity of people," Fletcher said. "That's what made it happen."
Hospice Care is a nonprofit corporation serving seriously ill patients and their families in Barbour, Marion, Monongalia, Preston, Randolph, Taylor, Tucker and Wetzel counties.
