The expansion of the Alzheimer's wing at the Beverly Healthcare Center will soon be completed and the expansion has added a new dimension to the care facility.
The construction project has expanded the existing unit to a 24-bed unit with innovative spaces designed to bring comfort to the Alzheimer's patients, including an area designed as a front porch and a small shop area for residents to do small projects that will be familiar to them.
Alzheimer's Care Coordinator Diane Hintz said the expansion should be completed sometime in the near future, with an open house planned for sometime in October. She encourages family members to visit the facility to view the project and see the changes in the program for the Alzheimer's patients.
The construction has expanded the outside fenced courtyard, and created a sunroom to be used for activities for the residents or just for relaxing in the calming atmosphere. An expanded kitchen area with a working stove and sink will provide a familiar environment for those residents who want daily chores such as washing dishes.
The effects of Alzheimer's [disease] rob a person of the ability to do everyday duties and make the familiar strange and confusing to them. The new unit's design will create familiar surroundings that will be a comfort to them.
Since many of the patients in the unit grew up in rural areas, there will be a room with a tub for those residents who grew up with a tub and not a shower. The expanded dining area will be more comfortable for the family-style dining that is beneficial for residents and staff members.
